Josefa "Chipita" Rodríguez, born in 1799, ran a stopover for travelers near the Aransas River. After a horse trader named John Savage was found dead in 1863 she was convicted on circumstantial evidence, even though the jury recommended mercy, and hanged at San Patricio on November 13, 1863. She is the only woman legally hanged in Texas. In 1985 the Texas Legislature passed a resolution saying she had not received a fair trial, and a state historical marker now stands in San Patricio. Local tradition holds that her wail is heard along the river at night, and the legend keeps her story alive.
