Harriet Annie Marshall, daughter of Dr. Winfield and Eoline Marshall, died in 1890 at age eleven, a few weeks after her birthday, from diphtheria. Already an accomplished violinist known for playing for anyone who'd listen, she was memorialized by her grieving parents with a life-sized statue of herself holding her violin, which still marks her grave in Elmwood Cemetery. Locals say the sound of violin music can still be heard drifting through the cemetery at night — a legend so associated with the grave that she's known simply as "Violin Annie." The cemetery borders the village of Central City but lies within Centralia.
