Campus legend at Berry College holds that during World War II, a student living in the connecting tower between the East and West Mary dormitories learned her boyfriend had been killed overseas and took her own life in grief, not found for days afterward. The room where it supposedly happened is kept locked. The story has one significant problem, according to the college's own archives: a school official stated in 1990 that the towers were never used as student housing at all, built only to provide roof and mechanical access, which casts real doubt on whether the death occurred as described, or at all. Doubtful history aside, residents of East and West Mary still report wailing carried through the vents late at night and unexplained cold spots near the tower stairwells.
The campus's other well-known ghost, the "Green Lady," has been reported along Stretch Road and Lavender Mountain Road, which connects the college's main and mountain campuses, since at least the mid-1980s. Two theories attempt to explain her: some connect her to a girl said to have drowned in a nearby creek in the 1930s, while others tie her to Lindsey Elizabeth Will, a Berry student who died in 1988 in a bicycle accident on Stretch Road after a night ride with her boyfriend ended when the two, unable to see each other in the dark after separating, collided. Witnesses describe her as a young, faint figure in a tattered green dress, sometimes wearing a bonnet, appearing in headlights or rearview mirrors along the road, or as a green mist drifting across the path at night.
Mary Hall is part of a student residence complex on Berry College's campus. The interior is not open to visitors, though the campus grounds are open to the public. The campus archivist could not confirm the legend's details, so treat the story as folklore.
