Winfield sprang up in 1881 after prospectors found gold flecks in the creek, reached about 1,500 people by 1890, and declined after the 1893 silver crash, with the post office closing in 1912. Its 1889 log schoolhouse is now a museum, Ball Cabin shows a miner's home, and the cemetery holds 26 graves. About a dozen cabins nearby are private summer homes.
Four miles past Vicksburg on the same gravel road; the museums are small and seasonal.
