The English Building at the University of Illinois, built in 1905 as the Women's Building, is the subject of one of campus's most enduring ghost stories: a young woman who allegedly died in the building — drowned in a basement pool in some versions, fallen or jumped from a window in others — and still haunts it, blamed for doors opening and closing, creaking floors, and a faint woman's voice. University archivists have found no historical record supporting any of it: the building was never used as a dormitory, and no student death matching the story has ever been documented. The legend persists anyway, passed down through generations of students.
