Guests at the Andrew Jackson Hotel report hearing children playing in the hallways and in their rooms, finding belongings moved and TVs turned on to cartoons; the boys are said to roam the rooms and courtyards, and a spirit called Armand, tied to Room 208, is said to wake guests by laughing, turning the faucets and lights on, pulling the bedsheets and even pushing them out of bed. Andrew Jackson himself is said to haunt the corridors. Legend holds that a boys' boarding school for orphans of yellow fever opened on the site in 1792 and that the Great Fire of 1794 destroyed it with several children inside. The site later held a federal courthouse where Andrew Jackson was fined for contempt of court, and the hotel's building on Royal Street is a National Register building from 1888.
Working boutique hotel at 919 Royal Street in the French Quarter, open to overnight guests. Ask the hotel about Room 208, the room tied to the story.
