Terlingua was a quicksilver (mercury) mining town built around the Chisos Mining Company after cinnabar was found in 1884, with about 2,000 people at its early-1900s peak, and the mine closed in 1946. Adobe ruins, a crumbling schoolhouse, a cemetery and a few restored buildings, now a trading post and a dinner theater, stand beside a small artist community at the gateway to Big Bend. The annual chili cook-off draws thousands in November.
Open town with shops, galleries and lodging; the ruins are free to wander.
