William Henry Bartlett came from Illinois and founded Sahuaro Ranch in 1886, building it into a working spread of fig and fruit orchards, vineyards and alfalfa. It passed through several owners before Glendale took it on as a city park in 1977, its historic buildings restored and open to the public. Visitors describe a woman in a long dress disappearing around the corners of the ranch house, voices in the historic buildings, shadows moving through the gardens, and a male presence about the grounds that some take to be Bartlett, still keeping an eye on the place.
Sahuaro Ranch Park is a public City of Glendale park; the historic ranch buildings are open for tours on a set schedule, so check the park's hours before visiting.
