This 1892 brick building served as the Scott County Poor Farm, a state-mandated county home where residents without family or money lived out their final years, working the self-sufficient farm as they were able. It operated until 1973, was later used for county offices, and reopened in 2001 as the Scott County Heritage Center and Museum; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Visitors and staff have reported a baby crying, footsteps on the empty second floor, strange odors, and lights turning on when the building is closed — attributed to former residents who, by local account, liked living there enough not to leave.
County museum in the former poor farm, open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday with free admission. Remember that many residents here lived in poverty and died here.
