The Rundel Memorial Building, the downtown anchor of Rochester's Central Library, is said to be haunted by something in its closed stacks and in the old subway bed beneath it. Staff have described doors that open and slam shut on their own, elevators that move by themselves, footsteps and moans with no one in sight, and figures that seem to play hide-and-seek in the shadows of the upper stacks. Security cameras have repeatedly caught a door swinging open and closed on its own. Locals tie the lore to Laura Young, who was about 26 when she died in 1902 in the Johnson and Seymour raceway, the waterway that still runs beneath the library; Rochester city historian Christine Ridarsky says there are several theories about how she died. Ghost-walk guides add stories of an engineer's shadow and of passengers seen boarding and leaving trains in the basement, where the Rochester Subway ran from 1927 to 1956.
Ghost Hunters spent two nights here in August 2012 for the Season 8 episode "Due Date with Death" (aired November 28, 2012), exploring the stacks and the aqueduct below. Jason Hawes and Steve Gonsalves heard a voice, moaning and footsteps walk past them near a door, other investigators recorded a clear voice and the squeak of a cart, and security video showed a shadow peeking out from behind a shelf. TAPS said its experiences and evidence supported the staff's reports.
The Art Deco and Beaux-Arts building, designed by Gordon & Kaelber and dedicated in 1936, was funded by Morton W. Rundel's bequest and a New Deal grant. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Public library, free to enter. Check the Rochester Public Library for hours; the closed stacks are not open to visitors except on special tours.
