Built in 1871 as the Porter County Jail and Sheriff's Residence, this Italianate-and-castle-style building held prisoners starting in 1872 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Porter County Historical Society, founded in 1916, used it as a museum from 1975 to 2020 before moving to a new downtown Valparaiso location in 2022. Paranormal activity has been reported here for years, with more sightings and odd occurrences during the building's Halloween haunted-house events.
The county museum moved out of the 1871 jail in 2020 and now operates across the street, open Tuesday through Sunday with free admission. The old jail building is a historic landmark but is not the museum.
