The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor is a three-story Queen Anne building designed by the Portland firm of Francis H. Fassett and his son Edward, which the local Knights of Pythias built in just 70 days in 1894 as their lodge hall. Since 1949 visitors have described an odd presence in the second-floor green room, and a phantom piano player is sometimes blamed on Earl Cliff, who played piano there in the early 1900s. Similar experiences were reported again during a town celebration in 1957 and in 1977. Ushers have said they heard their names called, felt a touch, or had an arm grabbed, and one visitor saw a man in military dress floating across the third floor where the lodge once met. The building is now an arts venue.
