The Old Wilkes Jail in Wilkesboro is a 19th-century brick jail, now a museum of the Wilkes Heritage Museum, and is where Tom Dula, remembered in the song Tom Dooley, was held before his 1868 hanging for the murder of Laura Foster. Visitors and staff report hearing his footsteps in the cell he once occupied and the spirit of a little girl killed by runaway horses. Evening ghost tours of downtown Wilkesboro run on select dates.
Museum open on weekdays with guided tours through the week, plus seasonal ghost tours; check the Wilkes Heritage Museum for hours.
