Built in 1891 at Henry Flagler's expense — he wanted the county's old jail out of sight of his luxury Ponce de Leon Hotel — the Old Jail housed St. Augustine's most violent offenders and executed eight men on its own gallows before closing in 1953. Now a museum offering daily tours and a nighttime paranormal investigation experience, staff and visitors have long reported shuffling footsteps, cold spots, foul odors, and the shadow of an unusually tall man believed to be the jail's towering first sheriff.
Museum open daily with an admission fee. Guided tours run throughout the day; check the museum's website for current hours.
