The Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe was built in 1871 and held prisoners until 1995. VisitPA lists it among the state's haunted places for the handprint in Cell 17. The legend says that Alexander Campbell, hanged in 1877 as one of the Molly Maguires, a group of Irish coal miners convicted in a controversial series of trials, declared his innocence and pressed his hand to the wall, saying the mark would never wash away. The jail hosts evening ghost tours in October and is on the town's Ghost Walk.
Museum open from May through October (closed Wednesdays), with special October ghost tours; check the museum for hours.
