North Bloomfield, once called Humbug, was the supply town for the huge hydraulic mining pit at Malakoff Diggins and held more than 2,000 people before an 1884 ban on hydraulic mining ended the boom. It is now preserved inside Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park with wooden homes, a church, schoolhouse, store and museum, and a handful of residents still live there.
Park open daily with a visitor center; ranger-led town tours run in summer and on weekends.
