Malad City was settled in 1856 by a party of Latter-day Saint families sent by Brigham Young, and grew to become the fastest-growing village in eastern Idaho by 1886. Local legend holds that a former cemetery groundskeeper, let go from his job, took his own life on the grounds and can still be seen tending the grass and looking after the graves he once cared for. A woman in a red dress has also been reported walking the cemetery at night.
