The Lucerne Inn on Route 1A in Dedham grew from a house built in the early 1800s that its owner enlarged into a tavern and inn, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Staff, locals and overnight guests have long told ghost stories about the inn, most often about Room 8, where guests report shadows and conversations outside the door when no one is there. The inn's piano is said to be heard playing when the room is empty. A long-told tale of a jealous caretaker and a murder-suicide is unverified. The inn is a working business, and these accounts are guest and staff lore.
Working inn and restaurant on Route 1A between Ellsworth and Bangor, open to overnight guests and diners; call 207-843-5123 or book through the inn.
