The Landers Theatre in downtown Springfield opened in 1909 and has hosted performers such as Lillian Russell, John Philip Sousa and Lon Chaney. Its most-seen spirit is a janitor said to have died in the theater's fire on December 17, 1920. Another story tells of a baby accidentally dropped from the upper balcony, and actors on stage say they have heard the baby cry, followed by a mother's soothing words. Springfield Little Theatre, which runs the Landers, offers a haunted ghost tour of areas closed to the public.
A working theatre; tickets are needed for performances, and ghost tours run on select dates. Check Springfield Little Theatre's site.
