At King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, guests and staff report footsteps, chanting, and battle cries along the top-floor corridors, along with sightings of ancient Hawaiian warrior apparitions. This Kailua-Kona hotel stands at Kamakahonu, where King Kamehameha I lived out his final years after uniting the Hawaiian Islands, ruling from here until his death in 1819. The nearby 'Ahu'ena Heiau, his personal place of worship, was restored as an accurate replica in the 1970s and still stands on the property. As is traditional for Hawaiian ali'i, the location of Kamehameha's actual burial was deliberately kept secret and has never been confirmed, though some local accounts place it near the hotel grounds.
Operating beachfront hotel, now the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. Ahu'ena Heiau next door is sacred and you cannot enter it, though the hotel offers free weekday tours that explain it.
