Hotel Baker opened to the public on June 2, 1928, with rooms starting at $2.50 a night. Its sixth floor, originally the chambermaids' quarters and now a storage area and penthouse suite, carries the hotel's best-known ghost story: a chambermaid said to have drowned herself in the nearby Fox River sometime in the 1970s after being left at the altar, or, in another version, after being abandoned by a fellow employee she'd been seeing. Guests and staff report moaning from the sixth floor, strange voices, and bedding pulled by an unseen force in the penthouse suite; despite investigation, no historical record of the maid or her death has been confirmed.
