Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier opened in 1854 and covers about 35 acres on a hillside above the Winooski River. Its legend is Black Agnes, the nickname of the bronze figure Thanatos by Karl Bitter on the grave of John E. Hubbard, a wealthy and disliked Montpelier man who died in 1899. The story says that anyone who sits on its lap at midnight will meet misfortune within days, months or years, depending on the teller; no deaths have been documented. The cemetery is an active historic burial ground.
Public cemetery open to visitors in daylight; please do not sit on or climb the statues, and be respectful of the graves.
