Fort Bayard, New Mexico

Fort Bayard was founded in 1866 as a cavalry post that included Buffalo Soldiers and Apache scouts, and it later became a tuberculosis sanatorium for the Army and then a state hospital, with the old parade ground, officers' quarters and hospital buildings still standing. The site is a National Register historic district, and the Fort Bayard Medical Center, a long-term care facility, still operates on the grounds. New Mexico haunted-places lists describe reports of apparitions and sounds in the old hospital and quarters.
Guided tours of the historic district are offered by the Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society on Saturdays, meeting at the Commanding Doctor's Home and Museum. The medical center is an active care facility, so stay on the tour and respect residents' privacy.
