The Doherty Hotel in Clare opened in 1924 and became a stop for travelers heading north and, during Prohibition, a speakeasy and meeting place for Detroit's Purple Gang. In 1938 Isaiah Leebove, a former Purple Gang attorney turned businessman, was shot and killed there by his cousin and business partner Jack Livingston. Guests report loud knocking, doors that lock and unlock on their own, the scent of perfume linked to the family matriarch Helen Doherty, and dark figures anywhere from the lobby to the top floor. It is regularly named among Michigan's most haunted hotels and still takes overnight guests.
