Decatur House on Lafayette Square, designed by Benjamin Latrobe and completed around 1818, was home to naval hero Stephen Decatur, who was killed in a duel in 1820 just over a year after moving in. Legend says his figure is seen looking toward H Street and that its windows were bricked up to keep the ghost from frightening passersby. Ghost-tour guides also say the cries of Charlotte Dupuy, an enslaved woman who sued for her freedom in 1829, are heard in the house. The stories are local lore, and the house is headquarters of the White House Historical Association.
