Campground Cemetery, a small burial ground southwest of Mattoon near Lake Paradise Road, is featured in a published book on Illinois's haunted places after its authors researched the site's history and interviewed local witnesses. Passersby have reported seeing picnickers dressed in clothing from the late 1800s or early 1900s near the graves, only for the figures to vanish moments later when they look back; others describe strange lights, and callers reporting suspected vandals to the sheriff's department have found no one at the scene when deputies arrived.
