Brunswick's Old City Hall is widely said to be haunted by Officer Robert L. Massey, a Brunswick police officer shot in the building in 1890. People describe footsteps on the stairs, doors opening and closing, a black shadow creeping along the staircases and full-bodied apparitions, and Massey is said to be seen fairly regularly, sometimes as a fleeting glance and sometimes in longer encounters. Two officers once reported a chair that had stood against a wall found inches from the staircase, and the claims have grown since the building was restored around 2000. According to the city's police honor roll, Massey was shot at City Hall on April 12, 1890, and died the next day, after a man fined two dollars for disorderly conduct refused to pay.
Ghost Hunters investigated in Season 9, Episode 23, "An Officer and an Apparition" (October 2014); the police chief wanted to know whether the spirit of a fellow officer could be helped to find peace. Jason Hawes and Steve Gonsalves heard footsteps and others heard whistling, Amy Bruni and Adam Berry held an hour-long exchange with an unseen presence that answered through their flashlights, and a vibration device beeped four times with only three people in the room.
The Richardsonian Romanesque building on Queen Square was designed by Alfred Eichberg, built from 1886 to 1889, and given its clock tower in 1893. Its red brick, white terra cotta and gargoyles survive, along with heart-pine floors and refitted gaslight fixtures inside. It is a contributing building in the Brunswick Old Town Historic District, and the former courtroom upstairs is now event space.
Open to visitors for self-guided looks and rented for events; listed hours are inconsistent, so call the City of Brunswick before going. The upstairs courtroom is event space and the city's Historic Preservation Board has met here.
