All Saints Waccamaw Church on Pawleys Island has the grave of Alice Flagg, a flat stone marked only "ALICE" under a large oak. The best-known South Carolina ghost story says that Alice, a teenager from a rice-planting family who died in 1849, was forbidden to marry the man she loved; her brother is said to have taken the engagement ring she wore on a ribbon and thrown it into a creek, and she died soon after. Legend says her spirit still looks for the ring, tugging at women's wedding rings and appearing at the family home, the Hermitage, in Murrells Inlet. SCETV's "Ghosts and Legends" retells it. Alice was a real young woman, and her grave is treated with respect.
An active church and cemetery open to visitors by day; please stay on the paths and do not perform rituals or disturb the grave. The Hermitage is a private house.
